How to Choose a Therapist
in Cypress, TX
By Natalie Parffrey, LPC · Cypress, TX
So you've decided to try therapy.
That's a big step. And it matters.
Now comes the part nobody warns you about — actually finding someone. You open Google, type in "therapist near me" or "therapist Cypress TX," and suddenly you're staring at a wall of names, photos, and specialties with no clear way to tell them apart.
It's overwhelming. And it's one of the reasons a lot of people close the tab and put it off for another few months.
I don't want that to happen to you. So here's what I'd actually tell a friend who asked me how to find a therapist in Cypress — or anywhere in the Houston area.
Start with the basics: credentials and licensing
In Texas, licensed therapists carry one of a few credentials:
- LPC — Licensed Professional Counselor
- LCSW — Licensed Clinical Social Worker
- LMFT — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
- PhD / PsyD — Psychologist
All of these are legitimate, licensed mental health professionals. The credential matters less than the person and their training. What matters is that whoever you see is licensed in Texas — which means they've completed supervised hours, passed board exams, and are accountable to a licensing board.
You can verify any Texas therapist's license for free at the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors website. It takes about 30 seconds and gives you peace of mind.
Look for someone who specializes in what you're dealing with
A good general therapist can help with a lot. But if you're carrying trauma, grief, anxiety rooted in the past, or relationship wounds — you want someone who has specific training in those areas.
Look for language like:
- Trauma-informed
- EMDR-trained
- Somatic therapy
- Attachment-focused
- CPTSD or complex trauma
A therapist who says "I work with anxiety and depression" is different from one who says "I specialize in trauma using EMDR and somatic approaches." Both might be wonderful. But if you've been through something significant, the second one is likely a better match.
Don't be afraid to look at the whole website, not just the homepage. The About page, the services listed, even the way they write — it all tells you something about who they are and how they work.
The fit matters more than you think
This is the one I wish more people knew before they started.
Research consistently shows that the single strongest predictor of whether therapy helps is the therapeutic relationship — the connection between you and your therapist. Not the techniques. Not the modality. The relationship.
That means you need to actually like your therapist. Feel comfortable with them. Trust them enough to say the hard things out loud.
You don't have to feel completely at ease right away — that takes time. But after the first session or two, you should feel like:
- This person gets me
- I don't have to perform or manage their feelings
- I could tell them the real version of this story
If you leave every session feeling worse, or you feel judged, or you're editing yourself to seem more okay than you are — that's information. It doesn't mean therapy doesn't work. It might mean this particular therapist isn't your person.
Use the free consultation
Most therapists in Cypress and the Houston area offer a free 15-minute phone or video consultation before you commit to a first session. Use it.
You don't have to have a perfect list of questions. You can just talk for a few minutes and see how it feels. Pay attention to:
- Do they let you finish your sentences?
- Do they ask good follow-up questions?
- Does talking to them feel natural, or stiff?
- Do they seem genuinely curious about you — or are they already fitting you into a box?
Your gut is data. Trust it.
In-person vs. online: both work
If you're in the Cypress area, in-person therapy gives you the full experience — a dedicated space to show up, sit down, and be present. There's something about physically leaving your house, driving somewhere, and walking into an office that can help your brain shift into a different mode.
That said, online therapy is genuinely effective and more convenient for a lot of people — especially parents, people with unpredictable schedules, or anyone who just doesn't want to deal with 290 traffic. I offer both, and I've seen real, deep work happen through a screen.
What matters most is that you actually show up consistently. Choose whichever format makes that easier.
Don't let insurance be the only filter
Insurance can limit your options significantly — and sometimes rules out therapists who would be an excellent fit for you. Before you stop at "does this person take my insurance," also ask:
- Do they offer a sliding scale?
- Can I use my FSA or HSA?
- What's the out-of-pocket cost if I pay privately?
A few sessions with the right therapist — even at a higher cost — often moves the needle more than months with the wrong one. I'm not saying money doesn't matter. It absolutely does. I'm saying it's worth asking the question before you rule someone out.
You're allowed to try more than one
This is maybe the most important thing I want you to hear.
If you see someone twice and it doesn't feel right — you're allowed to try someone else. That's not failure. That's not being difficult. That's you taking your healing seriously enough to find the right fit.
I've had clients come to me after trying two or three other therapists. And they found what they were looking for. The search was worth it.
"Finding the right therapist is part of the healing process — not a detour from it."
