Getting Started

How do I schedule my first appointment?

You can schedule your first appointment in several ways:

  • Online: Use our secure booking system at hopeonthehorizontx.clientsecure.me
  • Phone: Call (713) 476-1023 during business hours
  • Email: Send a message to natalie@hopeonthehorizontx.com

I offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you feel comfortable and answer any questions before your first session.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is primarily about getting to know each other and understanding your needs. We'll discuss:

  • What brings you to therapy
  • Your goals and what you hope to achieve
  • Your background and current situation
  • How we can work together
  • Any questions you have about the process

This helps us determine if we're a good fit and create a plan for your therapy journey.

How long does therapy typically last?

The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual and the type/modality of therapy being used. Each person's journey is unique, and we'll work together to determine the most effective approach for your specific needs.

The modalities I use go beyond traditional talk therapy, including evidence-based approaches like EMDR, trauma-informed care, and other specialized techniques that can often provide more efficient and effective results. However, effective results also rely on the client's commitment and active participation in the therapeutic process.

We'll regularly review your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure you're getting the most benefit from our work together.

Services & Approaches

What types of therapy do you offer?

I offer a comprehensive range of therapy services:

  • Individual Counseling: One-on-one therapy for personal issues, anxiety, depression, and life transitions
  • Couples Therapy: Relationship counseling using Gottman and EFT approaches
  • Trauma Therapy: Specialized treatment for trauma and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • EMDR Therapy: Evidence-based therapy for processing difficult memories
  • Hypnotherapy: For behavior change, stress reduction, and habit modification
  • Online Therapy: Virtual sessions for convenience and accessibility

What is EMDR and how does it work?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy for processing traumatic memories. It works by:

  • Helping the brain process traumatic memories naturally
  • Reducing the emotional intensity of painful memories
  • Promoting adaptive resolution of trauma
  • Often being effective in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy

During EMDR, you'll focus on a traumatic memory while following my finger movements or other bilateral stimulation. This helps your brain process the memory in a new way.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes, research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many conditions. Benefits include:

  • Same quality of care and therapeutic approaches
  • Convenience and flexibility
  • Accessibility regardless of location
  • Comfort of your own space

Most therapy services are available online, though hypnotherapy requires in-person sessions. We can discuss which approach is best for your specific needs.

What is hypnotherapy and is it safe?

Hypnotherapy is a natural state of focused attention that we all experience daily. It's completely safe because:

  • You remain fully aware and in control throughout
  • You cannot be made to do anything against your will
  • It's a collaborative process where you're an active participant
  • It works with your mind's natural abilities

Hypnotherapy can be effective for stress reduction, habit change, and accessing inner resources for healing.

Most importantly, remember that it's normal to feel nervous about your first session. I'm here to help you feel comfortable.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential with some important exceptions:

  • Safety concerns: If you're at risk of harming yourself or others
  • Child/elder abuse: If I learn of abuse of children or vulnerable adults
  • Court orders: If required by a court of law

I take your privacy very seriously and will discuss confidentiality in detail during our first session. Online sessions use HIPAA-compliant platforms to ensure your privacy.

About Therapy

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy can be helpful if you're experiencing:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or stress
  • Difficulty managing daily life or relationships
  • Unresolved trauma or past experiences
  • Desire for personal growth and self-understanding
  • Major life transitions or changes
  • Relationship difficulties

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, skill-building, or preventive mental health care.

Can I bring someone with me to therapy?

This depends on the type of therapy and your specific situation:

  • Individual therapy: Typically conducted one-on-one for privacy and focus
  • Couples therapy: Both partners attend together
  • Family therapy: Family members attend together
  • Support person: In some cases, a support person can attend part of a session with your consent

If you have specific concerns about attending alone, we can discuss this during your consultation or first session.
